The story in focus

Apple announced a MacBook Pro with a touchscreen and OLED display on October 28, 2026, reversing years of opposition to touch on Macs. Executives said integrating the sensor into the OLED panel avoided added weight or thickness.

  • Apple announced the touchscreen MacBook Pro at a Los Angeles event on October 28, 2026.
  • The display, called PROLED XDR, reaches 2,000 nits brightness and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
  • The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, about half a pound less than the previous model.
  • Preorders started October 28; the device reaches consumers November 6.
  • Prices start at $2,899 for the 14-inch M5 Pro model and $4,499 for the 14-inch M5 Max.

What Apple announced

Apple announced its first major MacBook Pro redesign in more than five years, adding a touchscreen to macOS for the first time. The demonstration showed users dragging files and using pinch-to-zoom gestures on a laptop in a normal, non-convertible configuration.

The OLED display, branded PROLED XDR, reaches 2,000 nits maximum brightness with a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and retains a 120Hz variable refresh rate. Apple cited burn-in protection but did not detail its approach.

The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, around half a pound less than its predecessor depending on configuration. The camera notch is replaced by the Dynamic Island cutout, and the lid logo glows again.

Executive rationale

Apple executives had previously argued that reaching to touch a laptop screen was ergonomically uncomfortable and clashed with macOS precision controls. John Ternus said adding touch required reaching a point where it made the product lesser in no way, including weight and thickness, which came together with the OLED screen.

Johny Srouji attributed the shift to changes in display technology, custom silicon and software architecture over a decade. Greg Joswiak said professional customers, most of whom already own an iPhone or iPad, expected touch.

Apple said it redesigned the hinge to reduce screen wobble during touch and added a thermal redesign so the display does not feel hot. Menus and window controls expand when touched for precision.

When does the touchscreen MacBook Pro ship?

Apple said preorders began October 28, 2026, and the device reaches consumers on November 6. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 with an M5 Pro chip; M5 Max configurations start at $4,499.
